Are you wondering what to expect during your contraceptive or birth control consultation with your gynecologist? Our expert OB/GYN Doctor, Dr. Sonia Kim, has some helpful information about what a standard birth control consultation appointment with her is like.
“WHEN PATIENTS COME TO THE OFFICE TO DISCUSS BIRTH CONTROL OPTIONS, I FIRST GET A FULL DETAILED HISTORY TO TRY TO GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHO THE PERSON IS, WHAT IS THEIR LIFESTYLE LIKE, WHY THEY WANT BIRTH CONTROL AND WHAT THEY EXPECT AS OUTCOMES FROM TAKING BIRTH CONTROL.
I GO OVER ALL BIRTH CONTROL OPTIONS STARTING FROM THE TOP TIER METHODS INCLUDING IUD, DEPOT, NEXPLANON AND THEN COVER THE 2ND TIER, BIRTH CONTROL PILL, PATCH AND NUVA RING. I THEN WILL DISCUSS ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF EACH KIND AND ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THE PATIENT MAY HAVE.
PRESCRIBING BIRTH CONTROL IS VERY INDIVIDUALIZED TO EACH PERSONS LIFESTYLE, NEEDS AND WANTS. AFTER COUNSELING WE DO ASK THE PATIENT TO FOLLOW UP IN 3-6 MONTHS SO WE CAN CONTINUE TO ASSESS THE PATIENTS SATISFACTION AND HEALTH.”
