Should You Increase Your Micronutrients (Electrolytes and Minerals) During Pregnancy?
Generally, the answer is yes! But it is important to talk to your OB/GYN clinician before adding supplements into your diet during pregnancy. You should also speak with your clinician about the best foods for your pregnancy, as well as what to avoid in your diet.
Regarding nutrients, the body undergoes many changes during pregnancy to supply the developing baby with everything it needs to grow. This requires increased nutrients, especially for specific minerals. If you are planning to become pregnant, or currently are pregnant, it's important to make sure you are consuming sufficient levels of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride), calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, iodine and more. Proper nutrient consumption can help minimize health risks for both you and your baby.
