The Pap smear is the one test that is responsible for decreasing the incidence of the cancer that used to kill many women. It is a screening test that is simple to perform. It detects not only cancer of the cervix, but also the precursors of cancer, allowing the physician to take preventive measures to ward off cancer. The ability to detect the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), the virus that causes cervical cancer, in the Pap smear has revolutionized the effectiveness of the Pap smear. In addition, DNA testing also allows the diagnosis of Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. It is a very simple test to perform with minimal discomfort for the patient. It is generally performed on an annual basis.
