Can I Eat Albacore While Pregnant?
Limit / use cautionGeneral guidance from FDA/EPA. Please always check with your provider.
Albacore tuna and yellowfin tuna are fine in pregnancy, just in smaller amounts than light tuna.
Why
The FDA places albacore (white) tuna and yellowfin tuna in its 'Good Choices' category, meaning they carry more mercury than light tuna but are still okay in limited amounts. Mercury can build up and affect your baby's developing brain and nervous system, so portion control is what keeps these fish safe.
How to enjoy it safely
Limit albacore or yellowfin to one 4-ounce serving per week, and if you eat it that week, skip other 'Good Choice' fish to stay within limits. For more frequent tuna, switch to canned light tuna, which is a 'Best Choice' you can eat 2 to 3 times a week.
When to ask your provider
Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider for help tracking your weekly fish if you eat tuna often or mix several types.
