Can I Eat Alcohol While Pregnant?
Best to avoidGeneral guidance from ACOG. Please always check with your provider.
This is the one drink to leave out entirely during pregnancy, and skipping it is the safest gift you can give your baby.
Why
There is no known safe amount or safe time for alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol passes freely through the placenta to your baby, who cannot process it the way you can, and it can cause fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, including lifelong problems with growth, learning, behavior, and physical development. Because no safe threshold has been established, ACOG recommends avoiding all wine, beer, and spirits for the entire pregnancy.
How to enjoy it safely
Reach for festive alcohol-free alternatives like sparkling water with fruit, mocktails, or non-alcoholic versions of your favorite drinks so you can still take part in celebrations. Be aware that some 'non-alcoholic' beers and wines contain trace alcohol, so choose ones clearly labeled 0.0 percent if you want to be fully sure.
When to ask your provider
Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider for support without judgment if stopping alcohol feels difficult, as they can connect you with help.
