Can I Eat Artificial sweeteners While Pregnant?
Generally safeGeneral guidance from ACOG. Please always check with your provider.
Artificial sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose, and stevia are considered safe to use in moderation during pregnancy.
Why
ACOG regards these approved sweeteners as acceptable in normal amounts, so a diet soda or a packet in your coffee is not a cause for worry. The one important exception is aspartame if you have phenylketonuria (PKU), a metabolic condition that prevents you from breaking down phenylalanine, in which case aspartame should be avoided. For most people, moderation is the only guideline.
How to enjoy it safely
Use these sweeteners in reasonable amounts rather than as the bulk of your daily intake, and remember that caffeinated diet drinks still count toward your 200 mg daily caffeine limit. Water, milk, and lightly flavored options remain good go-to choices.
When to ask your provider
Tell your Garden OB/GYN provider if you have PKU or are managing blood sugar, so they can guide which sweeteners are best for you.
