Can I Eat Black While Pregnant?
Limit / use cautionGeneral guidance from ACOG. Please always check with your provider.
Black and green tea are fine to enjoy in pregnancy as long as you keep an eye on your overall caffeine for the day.
Why
Black and green tea both contain caffeine, and ACOG counts that caffeine toward the same 200 mg daily limit recommended in pregnancy. A typical cup has less caffeine than coffee, but the amount adds up across multiple cups and alongside other sources like coffee, soda, and chocolate. Keeping the total under 200 mg helps lower the small risks linked to higher caffeine intake.
How to enjoy it safely
Tally your tea along with all other caffeine through the day, and consider naturally caffeine-free options like rooibos when you want a comforting extra cup. Steeping tea for a shorter time also lowers its caffeine content if you want to stretch your allowance.
When to ask your provider
Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider about specialty or herbal-blended teas, since some blends contain herbs that need separate consideration.
