Can I Eat Caffeinated matcha While Pregnant?

Limit / use caution

General guidance from ACOG. Please always check with your provider.

You can still enjoy matcha during pregnancy; the key is remembering that it is a fairly concentrated source of caffeine.

Why

Because matcha is made from whole powdered green tea leaves whisked into your drink rather than steeped and strained, a serving can deliver more caffeine than a typical cup of brewed tea. ACOG advises keeping total caffeine under about 200 mg per day, since higher intake has been associated with miscarriage and low birth weight, and matcha counts toward that daily limit along with coffee, tea, and chocolate.

How to enjoy it safely

Keep matcha to a smaller, ceremonial-style serving and tally it alongside any coffee, tea, soda, or dark chocolate you have that day so your total stays under 200 mg of caffeine. If you love the ritual but are bumping against the limit, a decaffeinated matcha or a naturally caffeine-free herbal alternative lets you enjoy the flavor with less to track.

When to ask your provider

Check with your Garden OB/GYN provider about your personal caffeine target if you drink matcha daily or also rely on other caffeinated drinks.
