Can I Eat Coffee While Pregnant?
Limit / use cautionGeneral guidance from ACOG. Please always check with your provider.
Your morning coffee can stay, just kept to a moderate amount that keeps you and your baby comfortable.
Why
ACOG advises keeping total caffeine under 200 mg per day, which is roughly one 12-ounce cup of coffee, because higher intake has been linked to miscarriage and low birth weight. Caffeine crosses the placenta, and your baby cannot break it down the way you can, so moderation is the goal rather than complete avoidance. Remember that brew strength and cup size vary, so a large coffee-shop drink can use up your whole daily limit on its own.
How to enjoy it safely
Track all your caffeine sources together, since tea, soda, chocolate, and matcha also count toward the 200 mg limit. If you want more than one cup, decaf is a satisfying way to enjoy the ritual without adding to your daily total.
When to ask your provider
Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider for a personalized caffeine target if you have a high-risk pregnancy or history of miscarriage.
