Can I Eat Cooked beans, lentils, tofu While Pregnant?
Generally safeGeneral guidance from ACOG. Please always check with your provider.
Good news for pregnancy meals: cooked beans, lentils, and tofu are a safe, nourishing choice you can lean on often.
Why
ACOG includes legumes and soy foods among the plant proteins that support a healthy pregnancy, and they carry no special foodborne risk once cooked. They deliver protein, iron, fiber, and folate, the same folate that helps protect your baby's developing brain and spine. Tofu and beans also help round out meals on days when meat does not appeal to you.
How to enjoy it safely
Cook dried beans and lentils until fully tender, and store tofu refrigerated and use it by its date. Pairing iron-rich legumes with a vitamin C food like tomatoes, peppers, or citrus helps your body absorb the iron, and rinsing canned beans lowers the sodium.
When to ask your provider
Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider how much daily protein fits your needs if you are eating mostly plant-based or following a vegetarian or vegan diet.
