Can I Eat Cooked eggs While Pregnant?

Generally safe

General guidance from ACOG. Please always check with your provider.

Fully cooked eggs and pasteurized egg products are a wonderful, protein-rich staple you can enjoy with confidence during pregnancy.

Why

ACOG considers eggs safe in pregnancy as long as they are fully cooked or made from pasteurized egg products, because cooking and pasteurization eliminate Salmonella, the main concern with raw or runny eggs. Beyond being safe, eggs are an excellent source of high-quality protein and choline, a nutrient that supports your baby's brain and spinal cord development.

How to enjoy it safely

Cook eggs until both the yolk and white are firm, which corresponds to an internal temperature of about 160F, and skip runny, soft-poached, or sunny-side-up preparations. For recipes that traditionally use raw egg, such as Caesar dressing, eggnog, or homemade mayonnaise, reach for pasteurized eggs or pasteurized egg products so they are safe to eat.

When to ask your provider

Mention it to your Garden OB/GYN provider if you have an egg allergy or specific dietary questions, so they can help you meet your protein and choline needs another way.
