Can I Eat Deli meat While Pregnant?
Limit / use cautionGeneral guidance from CDC. Please always check with your provider.
You do not have to give up your favorite sandwich entirely, you just need to handle deli meat with a little extra care during pregnancy.
Why
Deli meats, lunch meats, and cold cuts can carry Listeria, a bacterium that survives and even multiplies at refrigerator temperatures. The CDC flags listeriosis as especially dangerous in pregnancy because it can cross the placenta and lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or serious infection in the newborn, even when you feel only mildly ill. Cold, ready-to-eat meats are a known source because they are handled after cooking and then stored chilled.
How to enjoy it safely
You can still enjoy deli meat if you heat it until it is steaming hot, to 165F, just before eating, which kills Listeria. Let it cool slightly and assemble your sandwich fresh. As alternatives, freshly cooked meat sliced at home or canned and shelf-stable proteins carry much lower risk.
When to ask your provider
Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider if you have any history of foodborne illness or a weakened immune system, since they may want you to be extra cautious with all chilled ready-to-eat foods.
