Can I Eat Hard cheeses While Pregnant?
Generally safeGeneral guidance from CDC. Please always check with your provider.
You can relax and enjoy hard cheeses like cheddar, swiss, parmesan, and gouda during pregnancy.
Why
Hard cheeses carry a very low risk of Listeria because they are typically made from pasteurized milk and have low moisture content, which makes it difficult for bacteria to grow and survive. The CDC considers these among the safest cheese choices in pregnancy. Their dense, aged texture is part of what makes them so unfriendly to harmful bacteria.
How to enjoy it safely
Grate parmesan over pasta, slice cheddar or gouda for a snack, or pair with whole-grain crackers and fruit for a calcium-rich bite. These cheeses are a reliable everyday source of calcium and protein, and even raw-milk hard cheeses are far lower risk than soft raw-milk varieties.
When to ask your provider
Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider if you have specific concerns about a particular aged raw-milk specialty cheese.
