Can I Eat Herbal tea While Pregnant?

Limit / use caution

General guidance from ACOG. Please always check with your provider.

Herbal teas can be soothing, but it is worth a little caution since not all herbs are well studied in pregnancy.

Why

Herbal teas are not regulated as strictly as foods, and many of the herbs they contain have not been thoroughly studied for safety in pregnancy. Some herbs can have effects on the uterus or interact with your body in ways that are not fully understood, so ACOG advises caution and checking before using unverified blends. The amount of any given herb in a tea can also vary widely between brands and batches.

How to enjoy it safely

Stick to widely available, single-ingredient teas generally regarded as safe, such as ginger or peppermint, which many people use for nausea, and avoid unlabeled or homemade herbal blends. Reading the full ingredient list and choosing reputable commercial brands helps you steer clear of unexpected herbs.

When to ask your provider

Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider before regularly drinking any herbal tea so they can confirm the specific herbs are safe for you.
