Can I Eat Liver While Pregnant?

Limit / use caution

General guidance from ACOG. Please always check with your provider.

Liver is rich in iron and nutrients, so this is about portion and frequency rather than cutting it out completely.

Why

ACOG cautions against large or frequent servings of liver and liver pate because they are extremely high in preformed vitamin A, known as retinol. Too much retinol in pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, is linked to birth defects affecting the baby's development. The concern is the concentrated dose, not an occasional small taste.

How to enjoy it safely

If you eat liver, keep portions small and infrequent, and make sure it is fully cooked to reduce any bacterial risk. Lower vitamin A iron sources such as lean red meat, beans, lentils, and fortified cereals give you the iron benefit without the retinol load. Watch for other retinol sources like cod liver oil so the total stays modest.

When to ask your provider

Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider how liver fits with your prenatal vitamin, since they can confirm your total vitamin A intake stays in a safe range.
