Can I Eat Pate While Pregnant?

Best to avoid

General guidance from CDC. Please always check with your provider.

Refrigerated pate is one to set aside for now, but there is an easy shelf-stable swap that lets you keep the flavor.

Why

The CDC advises avoiding refrigerated pates and meat spreads because they are a recognized source of Listeria, which thrives at chilled temperatures and is handled after cooking. During pregnancy a Listeria infection can cross the placenta and cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or life-threatening illness in the newborn, even if your own symptoms are minimal. Liver-based pate also carries a separate concern from its high vitamin A content.

How to enjoy it safely

Canned or shelf-stable pate and meat spreads are considered safe because the canning process destroys Listeria, so reach for those instead of the refrigerated deli case versions. If you want a similar spread, well-cooked homemade options eaten fresh are a lower-risk choice.

When to ask your provider

Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider before eating liver-based pate of any kind, since they can advise on vitamin A limits alongside the Listeria concern.
