Can I Eat Peanuts While Pregnant?
Generally safeGeneral guidance from ACOG. Please always check with your provider.
You can enjoy peanuts, tree nuts, and nut butters during pregnancy with no need to hold back.
Why
ACOG advises that there is no reason to avoid peanuts or other nuts in pregnancy unless you personally have a nut allergy. Older guidance that avoiding nuts might prevent allergy in the baby has not held up, and nuts offer protein, healthy fats, and fiber that support you and your baby. Avoiding them is only necessary if you are allergic yourself.
How to enjoy it safely
Choose plain or dry-roasted nuts and nut butters without a lot of added salt or sugar, and spread nut butter on whole-grain toast or fruit for an easy protein and fat boost. If you keep raw nuts a long time, store them sealed to avoid them going rancid.
When to ask your provider
If you have a known nut allergy or a strong family history of food allergy, check with your Garden OB/GYN provider before including nuts.
