Can I Eat Raw flour While Pregnant?

Best to avoid

General guidance from CDC. Please always check with your provider.

Baking can stay a happy part of your pregnancy, with one easy rule about tasting along the way.

Why

Raw flour is not a ready to eat food, and the CDC has linked it to outbreaks of E. coli. Flour is a raw agricultural product that is not treated to kill bacteria before it reaches your kitchen, so the same germs that live in a field can still be present in the bag. Eating raw dough or batter, even without egg, can expose you to E. coli, which can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and dehydration.

How to enjoy it safely

Only eat flour, dough, and batter once they have been fully baked or cooked, since heat destroys the bacteria. If you want to enjoy dough safely, look for edible cookie dough products made with heat treated flour and no raw egg, and avoid licking the spoon or bowl while baking.

When to ask your provider

Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider right away if you develop severe diarrhea or signs of dehydration after eating raw dough or batter.
