Can I Eat Shrimp While Pregnant?
Generally safeGeneral guidance from FDA/EPA. Please always check with your provider.
Shrimp is a great choice during pregnancy, so you can keep it on the menu.
Why
The FDA lists shrimp as a low-mercury 'Best Choice,' which means it fits into the recommended 2 to 3 servings of low-mercury seafood each week. It is a lean source of protein with very little mercury, making it one of the easier seafoods to enjoy regularly while pregnant.
How to enjoy it safely
Cook shrimp until it turns opaque and firm, reaching 145F, so it is no longer translucent or gray. Avoid raw preparations like shrimp ceviche, and choose cooked shrimp in dishes, salads made at home, or stir-fries.
When to ask your provider
Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider how shrimp fits alongside your other fish servings for the week.
