Can I Eat Unpasteurized juice While Pregnant?

Best to avoid

General guidance from CDC. Please always check with your provider.

It is safest to set aside unpasteurized juice and fresh cider for now, and pasteurized versions let you enjoy them worry-free.

Why

Unpasteurized juice and fresh-pressed cider can harbor E. coli and Listeria because the raw fruit is not heated to destroy bacteria that may be present on the surface or in the pressing process. The CDC flags these as a risk in pregnancy, when foodborne illness can be more severe and can threaten your baby. Cider and juice sold at farm stands, orchards, and some refrigerated cases are the most common unpasteurized sources.

How to enjoy it safely

Choose pasteurized juice and cider, which most shelf-stable and bottled grocery products are, and look for a label confirming pasteurization. If a juice or cider is unlabeled or you are unsure, you can heat it to a rolling boil and let it cool, which makes it safe to drink.

When to ask your provider

Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider if you have had unpasteurized juice or cider and develop diarrhea, fever, or stomach cramps.
