Can I Eat Unwashed fruits and vegetables While Pregnant?

Best to avoid

General guidance from CDC. Please always check with your provider.

Fruits and vegetables are some of the best foods for you and your baby, and a quick rinse keeps them safe.

Why

The concern with produce is not the fruit or vegetable itself but what may be on the surface. The CDC notes that unwashed produce can carry toxoplasma and listeria from soil, water, or handling, and these germs can cause infections that are dangerous in pregnancy, including risks to your baby's development. Because the contamination sits on the outside, it can transfer to the flesh when you cut or bite into unwashed produce.

How to enjoy it safely

Rinse all fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water just before eating, even ones with peels you discard, and scrub firm produce like melons and potatoes with a clean brush. There is no need to use soap, and cutting away bruised or damaged areas adds extra protection.

When to ask your provider

Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider about toxoplasma if you also garden or handle cat litter, since those are other common sources of exposure.
