Can I Eat Well-washed fruits and vegetables While Pregnant?

Generally safe

General guidance from ACOG. Please always check with your provider.

Well washed fruits and vegetables are a wonderful, safe part of a healthy pregnancy diet.

Why

Once produce is rinsed clean, it becomes one of the most valuable foods you can eat while expecting. ACOG highlights fruits and vegetables as an important source of nutrients, including folate, which supports your baby's brain and spinal cord development, along with fiber and vitamins that help you feel your best. Washing removes the surface germs that are the only real concern, leaving you with all the benefit and very little risk.

How to enjoy it safely

Rinse produce under running water right before eating, scrub firm skins, and aim for a colorful variety to cover a wide range of nutrients. Leafy greens, citrus, berries, and beans are especially good folate sources to lean on.

When to ask your provider

Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider how much produce to aim for each day and whether your prenatal vitamin and diet together meet your folate needs.
