Can I Eat Yogurt While Pregnant?

Generally safe

General guidance from ACOG. Please always check with your provider.

Pasteurized yogurt is a nourishing, pregnancy-friendly choice that you can enjoy every day.

Why

ACOG identifies yogurt as a safe and beneficial food in pregnancy when it is made from pasteurized milk, which is the case for essentially all yogurt sold in US grocery stores. Pasteurization removes the Listeria risk that makes some dairy products a concern, and yogurt delivers calcium and protein your baby needs for building strong bones, plus live cultures that support digestion.

How to enjoy it safely

Check the label to confirm the yogurt is made from pasteurized milk, which standard store-bought varieties are, and keep it properly refrigerated. Plain or low-sugar yogurt topped with washed fruit makes a satisfying snack, and it is an easy way to add calcium without a lot of added sugar.

When to ask your provider

Ask your Garden OB/GYN provider about your calcium intake if you avoid dairy or follow a dairy-free diet, so they can suggest other ways to reach your daily target.
