Your baby at 17 weeks

Your baby is around the size of a pear now and is developing a layer of protective fat that will help regulate body temperature after birth. Baby is also practicing swallowing and sucking, and the umbilical cord is growing stronger and thicker. Cartilage throughout the body is gradually turning to bone.

Your body this week

You may notice your appetite continuing to grow along with your belly. Some people experience occasional dizziness from changes in blood pressure and circulation, so rising slowly can help. Vivid dreams, mild swelling, and a bit of breast growth are all common around this time.

Tips for week 17

Try to change positions slowly and stay hydrated to help with any lightheadedness. Sleeping on your side, often with a pillow between your knees, can become more comfortable and is a good habit to build. This can be a sweet time to start connecting with your baby through gentle talk or music.
