Your baby at 23 weeks
Your baby can now hear louder sounds from the outside world, including your voice, your heartbeat, and everyday noises around you. Skin is still a little translucent and wrinkled, but baby is steadily putting on fat to fill it out. Blood vessels in the lungs are developing in preparation for breathing after birth.
Your body this week
You may notice your feet and ankles swelling, especially at the end of the day. Mild and irregular tightening called Braxton Hicks contractions can begin around now, which is your uterus practicing. Some women experience changes in skin pigmentation, including darker patches on the face known as the mask of pregnancy.
Tips for week 23
Talk, sing, or read to your baby, since hearing your voice now can be soothing and helps you bond. Elevate your feet and stay hydrated to help manage swelling, and contact your provider if swelling becomes sudden or severe. Wearing a brimmed hat and sunscreen can help reduce darker skin patches.
