What is Adolescent Gynecology?
Adolescent Gynecology is gynecology services directed towards young women including teenagers.
The first thing that parents and teens should know is that their initial gynecologic visit doesn’t usually include a full pelvic exam. Their first visit may include a complete exam if they have a problem or they’re sexually active, but for most teens, this is a low-key visit. The team at Garden OB/GYN Forest Hills (Austin Street) looks forward to meeting each teen and using their first appointment to answer questions, talk about their overall health, and help them feel comfortable with gynecological care.
Young women don’t need to schedule their first pelvic exam or Pap smear until they reach the age of 21 or they become sexually active. However, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that young teens schedule their first gynecologic visit between the ages of 13-15 years. Making gynecologic care a regular part of a young woman’s preventive health routine empowers them to take control of their health. It also gives teens access to information about health issues, which may help them avoid common problems like STDs and unplanned pregnancy.
A typical adolescent exam includes a complete review of your medical history and reproductive history, a full medical assessment including vital signs, and a minimally invasive exam that may include an examination of your external genitalia. If any concerns arise during the exam, we allow plenty of time to explain the problem and to provide further medical care that may be needed.
