High-risk pregnancy Q & A

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy describes any pregnancy where new or existing health issues affect either the mother’s health or the growth and development of the baby. The health problems may also increase the risk of having a preterm delivery.

You may have a high-risk pregnancy if you’re older than 35 or younger than 17. Other common reasons a pregnancy is considered high-risk include:

  • Lupus
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Multiple babies
  • Pre-eclampsia
  • High blood pressure
  • Previous difficulties during pregnancy

The team at Garden OB/GYN offers comprehensive, customized care for high-risk pregnancies to support you throughout the time of your pregnancy, as well as during labor and delivery.

What kind of care will I receive for a high-risk pregnancy?

You can expect professional and compassionate care from the team of experts at Garden OB/GYN.

Unlike other practices in the area, Garden OB/GYN is officially maternal and fetal medicine (MFM) certified with a team that includes two board-certified MFM physicians with more than 20 years of experience.

Additionally, Dr. Petrikovsky is a leader in research in the field of perinatology, MFM, and high-risk pregnancies, and he has participated in more than 200 studies. In six of those studies, he partnered with the obstetrics team at Garden OB/GYN.

Dr. Petrikovsky’s research has been leading the way for advancements in treatments and care for maternal fetal medicine and high-risk pregnancies.

What are high-risk pregnancy services?

The obstetrics team at Garden OB/GYN offers a variety of services that focus on your health as a mother and the healthy development of your baby.

You can expect to receive routine exams that monitor your baby’s growth, and you may need to visit the office more frequently than a pregnant woman without any risk factors.

Your OB/GYN may also recommend additional diagnostic testing, such as 3D and 4D ultrasound and fetal nonstress testing, to ensure you and your baby both remain healthy throughout your pregnancy.

Certain tests may be necessary if you have underlying health issues, like diabetes or high blood pressure, to confirm your condition is well-controlled with your current treatment and not interfering with your pregnancy.

The team at Garden OB/GYN also offers in-office services that focus on:

  • Preterm birth
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Fetal complications
  • Cervical insufficiency
  • In vitro fertilization pregnancies

The experienced physicians also offer resources for pregnancy loss.

What services are available for high-risk pregnancies during labor and delivery?

At Garden OB/GYN, the obstetrics team works closely with you on a birth plan in the months leading up to your expected delivery date.

They can assist you with either a natural birth or a cesarean section (C-section) based on your needs. The physicians also specialize in vaginal birth after C-section (VBAC).

The obstetrics experts are also skilled in assisting you if you go into early labor, working to prevent premature delivery and ensuring your health and your baby’s health are the top priorities.
